What We Know About Marvel's 'The Punisher' Season 3 on Netflix

January 30, 2019

Will Frank return for a third round on Netflix?

Is Frank Castle’s story over?

With two seasons of Marvel’s The Punisher in the books, fans are curious to know when, and if, The Punisher Season 3 will ever release.

As of now, we can confirm that we can’t confirm a thing, but with the Marvel/Netflix universe collapsing before everyone’s eyes — Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil were all canceled in 2018 — you can’t blame fans for wondering if Frank Castle is next on the chopping block.

Here’s everything we know about The Punisher Season 3 on Netflix, from a possible release date to where that story might go if it gets renewed

Has The Punisher Renewed for Season 3?

No one knows! No one, not even executive producer Steven Lightfoot, is sure whether or not The Punisher will have a third season.

In various interviews, Lightfoot comes off as someone prepared to tell another 12-13 episodes, but is unsure if that opportunity will actually come.

“Some of the other shows have gone, but I’m still hoping that we get Season 3,” Lightfoot told Collider in a recent interview. “I’m taking the position where, when I made Season 1, it went out and we didn’t know whether we would get a Season 2, but the show obviously did well enough that we got that Season 2 pick-up. So, I’m living optimistically, that we’ll get to go again.”

In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, Lightfoot said Season 2 was all about Frank Castle’s total evolution into “The Punisher.”

“Hopefully people were like, ‘I can’t wait for Season 3 … and see what the hell he’s up to,’” the producer said.

In another interview with SYFY Wire, Marvel’s Jeph Loeb said it’s not Marvel’s decision to renew the series, but Netflix’s, which actually doesn’t sound very goodwhen you consider that Marvel’s parent company Disney is gearing up for its own competing streaming service, Disney+.

“That’s not our decision to make,” Loeb said. “It’s ultimately going to be Netflix’s call, as it is with every show. We are beholden to the network and it’s the network who decides whether or not we’re going to do it.”

When is The Punisher Season 3 release date?

Again, no idea. However, assuming it does get renewed we can probably guess that Season 3 will arrive a little over a year after Season 2. The Punisher first premiered in November 2017, and Season 2 followed 14 months later in January 2019. So based on that pattern, Punisher Season 3 might hit Netflix in March 2020.

Is there a trailer for The Punisher Season 3?

Not yet, though that all depends on whether the show gets renewed at all. If it does happen, you’ll still have to wait a while for the first Punisher Season 3 trailer.

With Season 2, Netflix offered plenty of small teases, but the first actual trailer didn’t arrive until January 2019, just a couple of weeks before the official release. So expect the same if we get a Season 3.

What is the story of The Punisher Season 3?

No one knows! But Lightfoot did say he’s “excited” to tell it, if he can.

“I’ve got a really good idea about what would be next,” Lightfoot said to ComicBook.com. “I’ve got a very good idea about what Season 3 is, I’ve got an idea for it I’m really excited about, which Marvel know about and they’re also excited about. We just obviously hope we get the chance to go make it.”

In a rather zen-like answer he gave during an interview with Variety, Bernthal said he’s “at peace” if The Punisher isn’t renewed.

“I know the reality of the situation and I’m at peace with it,” Bernthal said. “I really only worry about the things I can control. When I’m playing the character and I’m doing the job and it’s right there in front of me, I do whatever I can to make it as good as I can. But in this business there’s so much we can’t control. Whatever is happening with these shows, these decisions are being made in rooms I’m not invited into and I’m OK with that.”

Lightfoot also brought up Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin as a possible character for The Punisher Season 3, due to their history throughout the comics. (The two characters interacted during one episode of Daredevil Season 2.
